sustainable supported ZEISS in the development of a strategic climate target by calculating CO2 reduction paths that are in line with the global <2°C target of the Paris Agreement. The prepared results were used by the management as a basis for decision-making on a climate target.
ZEISS intends to save about 70% of Scope 1 and 2 emissions in the next 3 years
ZEISS has managed to keep its CO2 emissions virtually constant since 2010, despite increased added value and sales having more than doubled. At the beginning of the new 2019/2020 financial year, ZEISS will now be implementing further specific climate protection measures. An essential component will be the transition to CO2-neutrality of global energy procurement within the next 3 years. This is to be achieved first in Germany and then globally through the following measures:
- Own generation of renewable energies, e.g. through photovoltaics and geothermal energy
- Purchase of verifiably high-quality green electricity
- Compensation through the purchase of verified CO2
In addition to compensation for electricity, the purchase of gas shall also become climate-neutral.
